When KIDS IN SPORTS invited KIS girls
to meet members of the All American Girls Professional Baseball
League at a screening of A League Of Their Own last year, the KIS
kids were introduced to that historic moment when women played professional
baseball. The AAGPBL women discovered anew that sports bridge the
generation gap.
The screening was great fun, but the veterans wanted more than memories.
They asked if they might share their skill and knowledge of the
game with KIS kids.
So, on a gloomy June day this year, the KIS Bodger Sports Club hosted
an extraordinary GIRLS Spirit baseball clinic -- KIS girls took
pitching, hitting, running, and fielding instruction from veterans
of AAGPBL.
It was a grand day. The girls, full of energy and enthusiasm, had
all they could do to keep up with the League ladies. And the League
veterans, whose encouragement and willingness to share were simply
boundless, had a blast.
The youngsters learned a lot as every one got valuable tips and
training, but the skills they gained were a small part of the days
lesson. Learning, first hand, how sport informs life and life, sport,
the KIS girls admired and respected the veterans and found their
esteem returned in kind. For KIS girls, baseball is, forever, more
than just a game.
KIS extends hearty thanks to Nike, the
great parent volunteers who manage KIS Bodger Park Sports Club,
and the extraordinary women of the All American Girls Professional
Baseball League.
