KIDS IN SPORTS (KIS) helps kids play,
and learn from their coaches, every day. That makes each day special
for everyone who supports KIS, but when dozens of KIS kids attended
our recent event at Sony Pictures Studios, it was so special that
we wanted to share it with you.
KIS Board member Kelly Candaele’s mom was a member of the
original All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).
He honored his mother, and all the women who played pro ball in
the 40s and 50s, with a delightful documentary, A League Of Their
Own. That documentary inspired the hit movie.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the movie, Kelly arranged for
a screening at Sony – and for 7 of the original AAGPBL players
to attend. From the moment the KIS kids arrived, the event was electric.
The former pro’s were so generous, enthusiastic, and encouraging
that the children were dazzled. After the movie, with its scenes
of the original players on the field playing baseball, the KIS kids
were amazed to be in the company of athletes who are also pioneers.
All the kids, and especially KIS girls who play baseball and softball,
gained a new understanding of how far sports can take everyone –
and how history lives.
This was a true home run.
KIS extends our heartiest thanks to the
sponsors who made this special evening possible: PENNY FOLEY, THOMAS
E. LARKIN, PETER O’MALLEY, CHARLES D. MILLER, JOHN BRYSON,
CONWAY COLLIS, JONATHAN THOMAS, FLEISHMAN HILLIARD, INC.
